With all that up there for addons to the game, what do YOU typically play with, and what rules variants? Do you actually run a game and do find it to be fun and balanced?

Ninjadorg said...

Great question! Given that I designed these campaign rules it's fair to say I'm biased and I wouldn't play without them. They're as balanced as I could make them whilst still trying to keep them fun, and also still having those higher levels be difficult but attainable.

The randomness also ensures that even at higher levels you're still not guaranteed victory too, something which HeroQuest/Advanced HeroQuest/Warhammer Quest for example, couldn't deliver - your heroes would just become too powerful.

So, fun: yes, balanced: hopefully, but it's hard to say...

The cards look great. Thanks for the hard work. Your system really takes the game to the next level. Just a quick question: How do the cards from Artscow compare in size to those from the games?

Ninjadorg said...

Thanks mate.
The artscow cards are 2.5" x 3.5" so roughly the same size, but different texture and slightly different colour shades. Since most of these decks are independent of the core game decks it's not a big deal.
But if you were looking to design your own cards and shuffle them into the main decks then it's worth sleeving them. Hope this helps!

Hey Ninjadorg. I have recently found your additions to this great game. Love it all. Adds tons of advanced gameplay and replay value.
Quick Questions though.

1. With the leveling system is the monster scaling just more spawns? I curious on the difficulty with these rules once heroes level up and have improved items.

2. I love love love when you link these special cards to artscow. The professional look and double sided cards really help add to my sets. Could you link the artscow decks for the heroes leveling cards(CR,WOA,LOD), and the new monster cards as well?

3. On a similar note, does artscow print heavy stock cards such as the ones used for the base hero stats cards (the cardboard square ones)? If so you could link complete sets for the new heroes(base card, leveling card, and powers cards). Im curious if this is possible, i am a bit of a stickler for having custom additional content that I add match the color/size/cardstock of the original product.

Thanks, keep up the awesome work.

Ninjadorg said...

Thanks for your kind words, Anonymous!

1. The levelling system includes more spawns but more villains are added the higher you go too, so you are more likely to run into a minor villain in a regular monster card draw at first, and once you reach level 5, the major villains come into play during the game too. If and when the heroes are levelled up you’re in for a challenge. We still haven’t made it successfully to level 5 yet!

2. As soon as I get the chance I’ll post the extra monster and hero cards to artsco and post the links on my blog. Am a bit tied up with Fantasy Quest at the moment though!

3. Artscow prints excellent quality, professional looking cards that are the same size as the official powers/monsters/treasures etc but I personally have never used them for the heroes’ base stat cards so can’t comment on that I’m afraid. It’s definitely worth having a look on there to see if they do though if that’s what you’re after. :)

First I wanted to say thank you! For all the time and effort you have put into these magnificent pieces of art. It is a labor of love I am sure. I do have a couple of questions for you:

1) If you don't mind sharing, what software do you use for the development of your cards? I am thinking of trying my hand at but not sure where to start. Photoshop?

2) I had come up with a similar level progression my self, raising the exp needed by 5 points per level but not allow the ability to retain exp between games. I think I might like your system a bit better, any hindsight revelations about your system or something else you would like to see tweeked?

3) I had been fighting with the idea of how to scale monsters up to combat higher level characters. I like your idea of just increasing the number of those spawned. I will give this a try. I have a couple of other idea's about this, if your interested let me know, and I will share them with you.

I have a few more questions, but don't want to tie you up with too many at once. Thanks in advance for any input you would give. *now I just need to figure out how to set up my blog*

Ninjadorg said...

Thanks again for your comment, mate, great to have you on board.

1) Photoshop for everything. I picked it up as a hobby years ago but now it’s a huge part of my ‘real life’ career too – can’t recommend it enough. You can make yourself invaluable in the work place if you get to grips with it...

2) I think it works nicely, it might be a bit too hard sometimes, but then again some people claim to have hit level 5 with ease. I’d tend to want retire heroes at Level 5, but some have modded the system to reach level 10. At that point you’d probably want to start using some of the homebrewed monsters that are available on places like boardgamegeek, particularly the great work by BGGer ChromaticDragon (KY Wong) who continually produces cool new monster templates.

3) By all means share any ideas you have on this blog, we’d be happy to hear them.

Ask away if you have any other questions, I might not always be able to get back to them as quickly as I’d like but I always will eventually!

Any chance of getting encounter card templates as well? I've been dying to try to tweak this.

Thanks in advance, and thanks for all of your time, effort and energy: they are much appreciated!

I just picked up CR and WoA to introduce my spouse and my little brothers family to the bare basics of D&D after 20 years of playing pen and paper. We are loving the game system. I stumbled across your blog and I'm extremely interested in bringing your system to the table extremely soon! I'm having issues locating your campaign rules though as well as any custom adventures you may have. I'm getting ready to order the decks from Artscow and print some of your other custom cards...but I fear that I may not be receiving all the information needed to completely enjoy your labor of love. Just wondering if you or someone else could provide a link to a PDF of the rules and adventures as I'm not having any luck finding them. (Probably right under my nose). Thanks again Ninjadorg, been following you across several forums for awhile now and you really have a talent for this!

Ninjadorg said...

Hello Shane, thanks for your comments and kind words. The campaign rules are available at the top of this page in the PDF bundle. It’s the last pdf of the bunch. The rules are only a couple of pages long to adhere as closely to the regular game’s rules as possible. Thanks again and I hope you enjoy them! ND

We played your campaign system a few weeks ago. It was a blast. Good work. I would never play Ravenloft without them any more. :)

Ninjadorg said...

Thanks Beckikaze, great to hear it - I think there's an amazing game to be had underneath this pretty-brilliant-already game!

Gamer Hudson said...

Where are the rules for using all the event cards in the town? I am lost so many links!

Gamer Hudson said...

I am new to all these add ons so where are the rules to USE the event decks and such in the town? Thanks

Ninjadorg said...

Hey Hudson - the rules for the Named Tiles decks are in the Campaign Rules PDF at the top of this page.

For the town events just draw one per hero between each adventure. Hope this helps! :)

Awesome thanks!

do you have templates for creating your monsters for WoA, CR, and LoD? Love the other files you've put up, they're great! Thanks!

Ninjadorg said...

Thanks mate. User geckoth has posted up some high quality psds for this exact purpose over on boardgamegeek.com, have a look in the files section for these games.

Might be a stupid question but when it comes to leveling past 2nd level. When you level do you spend the xp, and have to get 20 more to hit level 3 or do you save it and your total has to hit 20 to get to level three..basically making it level every 10 xp?

Ninjadorg said...

You spend the XP like with level 2 then you have to save back up again.

I'm new to the dungeons and dragons scene and I'm not exactly quite sure how this is played. Is this played like regular WoA or do we have a dungeon master?

Ninjadorg said...

It's played like regular WoA, I.e. Without a dungeon master. You just add these cards into your regular game.

Revelation said...

We've just started playing LoD and Ravencroft.
We've noticed we really ran through the default adventures so we want to play a campain together. We only have no clue why.

As far as I understand it now:

We need to print these decks.
We start a default adventure and when we enter a named room we take an event card or room card, Or how else would we go about it? I'm just very confused right now. We'd love to really play a campain and level our heroes etc. But how do we start? does someone have a step by step on what we need to do?

Thanks,

Ninjadorg said...

The campaign rules come from wrath of ashardalon, sounds like the only one you don't have! Basically you draw a chamber card for the adventure goal tile, then shuffle that tile into the 9-12 position. When you kill a monster roll 1d6 and get that many hundred gold as treasure, but draw a treasure card instead if you roll a 6. Then follow all the rules above and get these decks printed. Ask away if you have any other questions. :)

Anonymous said...

Hello
Excuse me, I have some confusón about using their material.
The campaign rules have events for the tiles named (event cards and chamber) for Ravenloft.

Barovia (town event?) Is a deck for Ravenloft, a card is drawn after each adventure

Longbridge (town event?) Is a deck for WoA, steals a letter after each adventure

Is it right?

"When you kill a monster roll 1d6 and Get That many hundred gold as treasure, but instead draw a treasure card if you roll a 6. Then follow all the rules above and Get these decks printed"

This says that, does it come in written campaign rules? I have read and I have not seen, do not know if there are more rules written in a document that I have not located.

Sorry for my mistakes, I write with a translator on internet.
You did a great job, I like a lot. thank you very much

Ninjadorg said...

Hi Anonymous, sounds like you have it right. If you print everything here you'll have everything you need. The rolling a d6 for treasure is only if you don't have the treasure tokens from wrath of ashardalon, otherwise just use those as normal.

AROdecebolla said...

all cleared
thank you very much ninjadorg

Ninjadorg said...

You're most welcome. Thanks for posting and enjoy! :)

Anonymous said...

sorry, I forgot
How would you recommend mixing Ravenloft and WOA?
Mixing decks treasures, monsters ...
regards

Ninjadorg said...

Keep most things separate for thematic reasons, but shuffle together the heroes and treasure cards, and swap the kobolds out of CR and into WoA and replace them with the Cultists from WoA.
Also swap out some of the 'open' tiles from CR with the more directional tiles from WoA to create more interesting dungeon shapes.
And use the WoA treasure tokens in every game.

Thanks Topi!
They're great games, well worth collecting all 3. And I hope they pick up where they left off once d&d Next gets sorted out....

Hi, Great Job! :) I love the fact that there is an Azalin card and Lord Soth! :) I am looking at trying to get my own cards printed using the pdfs. This may be a lost cause but it's the Airmail cost from Artscow that has me wanting to try this method.

From what I see available on Artscow there are 164 cards total. When I counted the pdf file cards there were only 141. How many cards do I need for Ravenloft alone since that's all I have.

Thanks, Josh

Ninjadorg said...

Thanks Josh, I was a big fan of the original D&D setting and thought the game deserved a little bit more flesh on its bones as it were. Artscow do a lot of free shipping deals that it's often worth waiting for but if you cannot just go ahead an print the pdfs.
Ravenloft is the majority of the cards, there are only a few from Wrath of Ashardalon, so you will probably be better off just printing everything. For when you inevitably buy WoA... ;)
I think the extra ones on artscow are just a few late ones I added in to round out the order so there were no blanks - so I don't think you're missing anything critical.
Cheers!

Hey there,

Thanks for this - this is really great stuff. Just wondering, is this the best place to source this stuff, or should I get it from BGG? Which one is the most up-to-date. I notice, for example, that the LOD stuff doesn't seem to be here.

Ninjadorg said...

Thanks Tel. The BGG stuff is more recent. This is the system I use here, but the guys at BGG added LoD encounters too.

Anonymous said...

Not sure if this blog is still active but I am curious if this system works with WoA standalone? Or if you need Ravenloft. I am looking at a lot of the event and chamber cards and they seem to pertain to tokens with rules that I am not aware of. Thanks in advance for any help in this, and great work!

Ninjadorg said...

Still active Anon. Yes you can use these rules with all 3 d&d games. It's just best if you have all 3! :)

Anonymous said...

I guess I'm a little late to the party, but I was wondering where would be the most complete pdfs with the current status of the game (4 sets). It all looks great and I am excited to try it out.

Ninjadorg said...

Everything you need is here! :)
I haven't even got the 4th set yet but all this stuff is compatible across all the games.

Hey ninjadorg! The file of card backs with the deep blue artwork (link is https://www.scribd.com/doc/121810946/Dungeon-Deck-Backs-for-Dungeons-and-Dragons-Castle-Ravenloft-Wrath-of-Ashardalon-Legend-of-Drizzt-Adventure-System) is gone - Scribd says "This document has been removed from Scribd" when you try the link.

I'll check bgg in case you have it there also. But wanted to let you know it's dead.

Thank you!

Ninjadorg said...

Thanks for pointing that out James - Scribd was an extremely poor choice for a place to host the files unfortunately. :(

If I can gather them back together from my old hard drives I'll try to re-host them on Google Drive instead.

Uzair Parker said...

Wow, these are really awesome and thanks so much for posting this! Will definitely be using this in my custom campaign. I have recently built a custom campaign called "the Madness of Kavahn" which uses most of the Ravenloft components: http://lifeofuz.blogspot.co.za/2017/05/dungeons-dragons-castle-ravenloft.html

Great work dude!

Ninjadorg said...

Great stuff, thanks Uzair - and good luck with your campaign. It's great that so many people are still playing this classic game. :)
